Kerugiandamage is a coined term in dermatopathology describing injury to keratin-rich tissues, notably the epidermal keratinocytes and the stratum corneum. It refers to damage that results from a combination of chemical exposure, oxidative stress, and mechanical forces, leading to barrier disruption and inflammation. The term is not part of standard medical nomenclature and is mainly used in theoretical or research contexts.

Mechanistically, kerugiandamage involves impaired cell–cell adhesion, cytoskeletal disruption, and lipid matrix damage. Oxidative stress can induce lipid peroxidation and protein modification, reducing keratinocyte viability, while mechanical forces promote detachment and microabrasions. The sequence can produce hyperkeratosis or parakeratosis and expose underlying dermis to irritants.

Assessment relies on histology and immunohistochemistry to evaluate keratin markers, barrier proteins, and inflammatory mediators; in research settings, electron microscopy may reveal ultrastructural changes in desmosomes and cytoskeleton. It remains a descriptive descriptor rather than a clinical diagnosis.

Clinical relevance lies in modeling keratinocyte injury in contact dermatitis, irritant exposure, and chronic wounds. Management focuses on barrier restoration and minimizing irritants, with treatment guided by the underlying condition rather than the term itself.
