Kernmantleköysiä, or kernmantle rope in English, refers to a type of rope construction consisting of two main components. The core, known as the kern, is made up of many parallel strands of fibers that provide the rope's primary strength. Wrapped around this core is the mantle, also called the sheath or jacket, which is a woven or braided cover of fibers. This mantle protects the core from abrasion, UV damage, and other environmental factors, while also contributing to the rope's overall handling characteristics and durability.

The kernmantle construction offers significant advantages over traditional twisted ropes. By using parallel fibers in the core, the strength of the rope is not dependent on the friction between twisted strands, leading to higher tensile strength and better resistance to stretching.
