Kerningparen

Kerningparen is a term used in typography to describe targeted kerning adjustments applied to the characters adjacent to parentheses. While not a widely standardized term, it is used by some designers to refer to the practice of adjusting spacing specifically around the opening parenthesis and the closing parenthesis to improve optical balance in text and mathematics.

Kerning around parentheses affects the pairs such as the preceding character and the opening parenthesis, the characters inside the parentheses, and the characters after the closing parenthesis. In practice, adjustments may involve tightening space between a letter and the opening parenthesis, or between the closing parenthesis and the following letter, as well as within the pair of a preceding character and the opening parenthesis. The aim is to prevent gaps that look visually dominant or cramped when parentheses enclose short words, numbers, or symbols.

Implementation typically occurs in font design or typesetting workflows using kerning tables in OpenType fonts or through manual kerning in typesetting software. Because parentheses are punctuation rather than letters, many fonts ship with limited pair kerning for the punctuation; kerningparen efforts are usually done on a per-font or per-project basis, and results can vary across renderers and font sizes. In mathematical typesetting, larger parentheses may require different kerning behavior to maintain proportion with adjacent symbols.
