The term blends chemiosmosis with a suffix typical of taxonomic names, signaling a putative lineage rather than a confirmed taxon.

In concept and taxonomy, kemiosmoositeorian has no formal classification within recognized domains. It is used in thought experiments about metabolic diversity and the origin of chemiosmotic energy coupling, often described as an archaeal- or bacterial-like lineage to explore alternative biosignatures and membrane biochemistry.

Metabolically, kemiosmoositeorians are envisioned to generate ATP by exploiting a chemiosmotic gradient across a membrane. They may rely on proton or sodium motive forces, utilizing ATP synthase–like complexes. Proposed electron donors include hydrogen, reduced sulfur compounds, or ferrous iron, with autotrophic carbon fixation pathways analogous to the reverse TCA cycle or Wood–Ljungdahl pathway in some scenarios.

Habitat-wise, these organisms are hypothesized to inhabit extreme niches where geochemical gradients are pronounced, such as deep-sea hydrothermal vents, acidic hot springs, hypersaline pools, or mineral-rich surfaces that could sustain sustained ion gradients.
