Kehittämiskeskus

Kehittämiskeskus is a Finnish term for organizations that function as development centers, intended to support regional economic development, innovation, and competitiveness. They operate as intermediaries between public authorities, businesses, universities and research organizations, and may focus on a specific region or a specific sector.

Common activities include providing business advisory services, helping to develop projects and seek funding, supporting start-ups and SMEs with coaching and feasibility studies, organizing training and networking events, and facilitating collaboration between researchers and industry. They may also pilot new technologies, support internationalization and export readiness, and assist in innovation ecosystems by connecting actors and pooling resources.

Most kehittämiskeskus receive public funding, often through regional development agencies and national programs, and may operate as non-profit associations or limited companies. Financing also comes from European Union structural funds, local municipalities and universities, depending on the organization’s mandate. Governance typically includes a board with representatives from regional authorities, business communities, and higher education.
