Keeleõppemeetodid refer to the various approaches and techniques used to teach and learn a new language. These methods can range from traditional, teacher-centered instruction to more modern, communicative, and learner-centered approaches. The goal of all keeleõppemeetodid is to equip learners with the ability to understand, speak, read, and write in a target language effectively.

One of the earliest methods was the Grammar-Translation Method, which focused on translating texts and memorizing grammatical rules. This was largely superseded by the Direct Method, which emphasized using only the target language in the classroom and focused on oral communication and natural language acquisition. The Audiolingual Method, popular in the mid-20th century, utilized drills and repetition to instill correct pronunciation and grammatical structures, drawing heavily from behaviorist psychology.

More contemporary methods, such as the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), prioritize meaningful interaction and communication as the primary goal of language learning. CLT encourages learners to use the language in authentic situations, focusing on fluency and accuracy. Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) is another learner-centered approach where language is acquired through the completion of meaningful tasks.

Other keeleõppemeetodid include Total Physical Response (TPR), which links language learning to physical actions, and the Silent Way, which uses visual aids and the teacher's silence to encourage learner autonomy and problem-solving. The choice of method often depends on the learners' age, proficiency level, learning styles, and the specific goals of the language program. Effective language learning often involves a blend of different methods to cater to diverse needs and maximize engagement.
