Kcnc1
Kcnc1 is a human gene that encodes the voltage‑gated potassium channel subunit Kv3.1. The protein is a pore‑forming alpha subunit that forms homotetrameric channels responsible for a fast delayed rectifier potassium current (IKv3). Kv3.1 channels are inactivated rapidly after activation and allow neurons to fire at high frequencies by repolarizing the membrane rapidly.
The Kcnc1 gene is located on chromosome 3q27.2. Its transcription is regulated by neuronal activity and by
Mutations or altered expression of Kcnc1 have been linked to several neurological conditions. Polymorphisms in the
Kv3.1 channel activity is modulated by phosphorylation and by interactions with accessory subunits such as Kv3.2
