Kauppamalleja, or shopping malls, are large commercial buildings designed primarily for retail sales, typically comprising a variety of interconnected stores, restaurants, and entertainment facilities under one roof. The concept originated in the mid-20th century as a response to the growing demand for convenient, centralized shopping experiences, particularly in suburban areas where traditional downtown markets were declining.

The first modern shopping mall, Southdale Center, opened in Edina, Minnesota, in 1956, featuring innovative design elements like climate-controlled interiors and ample parking. Over time, malls evolved to include anchor stores—large department stores or chain retailers that draw customers—and smaller specialty shops. Many also incorporated amenities such as cinemas, food courts, and recreational spaces to enhance their appeal.

In Finland, the term *kauppakeskus* (literally "shopping center") is more commonly used, though *kauppamalli* can refer to smaller or themed shopping complexes. Finnish malls often emphasize accessibility, sustainability, and community integration, with some featuring green roofs, solar panels, or pedestrian-friendly layouts. Notable examples include the Helsinki-based *Sello* and *Stockmann* department stores, which serve as anchors in major urban malls.

The rise of e-commerce and online shopping has posed challenges to traditional malls, leading some to adapt by focusing on experiential retail, pop-up events, or hybrid models combining physical and digital sales. Despite these shifts, malls remain significant economic and social hubs, offering employment opportunities and serving as gathering places for communities. Their design and function continue to evolve in response to changing consumer behaviors and urban planning needs.
