Kauman
Kauman is a toponym used in Indonesia to refer to several urban neighborhoods that historically formed around royal courts and religious centers. The term is most closely associated with a historic district in Yogyakarta, Central Java, located near the Kraton Yogyakarta and within the city’s traditional core. In Kauman, religious life and daily commerce were long intertwined, and the area is noted for a historic mosque linked to the palace complex, commonly referred to as the Kauman Mosque. The neighborhood has traditionally housed palace staff, guards, and traders, and it has played a role in ceremonial life and royal court activities.
Beyond Yogyakarta, other districts and suburbs in Central Java and East Java have adopted the name Kauman.
The name Kauman thus reflects a historical pattern in Java where settlements grew around royal or devotional
