Kattekuivatamine

Kattekuivatamine, a traditional Estonian folk practice, refers to the drying of cats, typically performed as a method of preservation and, in some historical contexts, believed to possess protective or medicinal properties. This practice was more prevalent in rural areas of Estonia, particularly in the past when resources were limited and traditional beliefs held significant sway.

The process generally involved preparing a cat, often by skinning it and then drying the hide. Methods of drying could include air-drying, sometimes in sunlight or near a heat source, or using salt to cure the hide. The dried cat skin might then be used for various purposes. Historically, it was sometimes incorporated into clothing, such as gloves or as a lining, to provide warmth or perceived protection against ailments. In some folklore, dried cat parts were thought to ward off evil spirits or bring good luck.

While kattekuivatamine was a recognized practice, its prevalence and the specific ways it was carried out varied across different regions and time periods within Estonia. Contemporary views on the practice are largely negative, considering it outdated, unsanitary, and ethically questionable from an animal welfare perspective. It is no longer a common or accepted practice in modern Estonian society.
