Kasvukertaan, also known as growth spurt, refers to a rapid increase in physical growth that occurs typically during childhood and adolescence. This phenomenon is characterized by accelerated height and weight gain series, often accompanied by changes in skeletal and muscular development.

The timing and intensity of kasvukertaan vary among individuals and are influenced by genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors. In children, growth spurts frequently occur during prepubertal and pubertal stages, usually between the ages of 8 to 14 for girls and 10 to 16 for boys. During these periods, the growth plates (epiphyseal plates) in long bones are particularly active, contributing to noticeable increases in stature.

Physiologically, kasvukertaan is driven by hormonal changes, primarily the increase in growth hormone (GH) secretion from the pituitary gland, along with sex hormones such as estrogen and testosterone. These hormones stimulate the proliferation of cartilage cells at the growth plates, leading to bone elongation.

Symptoms of growth spurts include sudden increases in height, rapid weight gain, and sometimes temporary discomfort or joint pain due to rapid skeletal changes. Growth spurts typically last for several months, after which growth slows down as individuals approach their final adult height.

Monitoring growth patterns during childhood and adolescence is essential for identifying potential growth disorders, such as delayed growth or precocious puberty.
