Kasvillisuusvyöhykkeet, or vegetation zones, refer to the distinct regions of the Earth characterized by particular types of plant life. These zones are primarily determined by climate, including temperature, precipitation, and sunlight. Geography also plays a role, with factors like altitude and proximity to oceans influencing local vegetation.

The most widely recognized vegetation zones include tropical rainforests, savannas, deserts, temperate grasslands, temperate deciduous forests, boreal forests (taiga), and tundra. Tropical rainforests, found near the equator, boast high temperatures and rainfall, supporting a vast diversity of plant and animal species. Savannas are tropical grasslands with distinct wet and dry seasons, supporting grasses and scattered trees. Deserts, characterized by extreme aridity, have sparse vegetation adapted to survive with very little water.

Temperate grasslands, like prairies and steppes, experience moderate rainfall and distinct seasons, favoring grasses. Temperate deciduous forests are home to trees that shed their leaves annually, thriving in regions with moderate temperatures and rainfall. Boreal forests, or taiga, are vast coniferous forests found in cooler climates, dominated by trees like pines and spruces. Finally, the tundra, the coldest biome, is characterized by permafrost and low-growing vegetation such as mosses, lichens, and dwarf shrubs.

Changes in vegetation zones can also be influenced by human activities, such as deforestation, agriculture, and urbanization, as well as natural events like fires and volcanic eruptions. Understanding these zones is crucial for ecological studies, conservation efforts, and predicting the impact of climate change.
