Kasvainnäyte

Kasvainnäyte refers to a tissue sample taken from a tumor for diagnostic purposes. This procedure is crucial in determining whether a growth is cancerous or benign, and if cancerous, what type of cancer it is. The information obtained from a kasvainnäyte is vital for guiding treatment decisions and predicting the prognosis of the patient.

There are several methods for obtaining a kasvainnäyte. A biopsy can be an incisional biopsy, where a small piece of the tumor is removed, or an excisional biopsy, where the entire tumor is removed. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) involves using a thin needle to collect cells from the tumor. Surgical removal of a larger portion or the entire tumor can also serve as a source for a kasvainnäyte. The choice of method depends on the size, location, and suspected nature of the tumor.

Once collected, the kasvainnäyte is sent to a pathology laboratory. Pathologists examine the tissue under a microscope, often after processing it with various stains. They look for abnormal cell structures, growth patterns, and other cellular characteristics that indicate malignancy. Immunohistochemistry and molecular testing may also be performed on the sample to identify specific markers that can help classify the tumor and guide targeted therapies.
