Kastracja

Kastracja is the surgical removal of the testicles in male animals or the ovaries and uterus in female animals, a procedure also known as neutering. In males, this involves excising the testes, which are responsible for producing sperm and testosterone. In females, it encompasses the removal of the ovaries and often the uterus, eliminating the ability to reproduce and produce hormones like estrogen and progesterone.

The primary reasons for performing kastracja are to prevent reproduction and manage animal populations. It is a common practice in domestic pets like dogs and cats, contributing to a decrease in unwanted litters and shelter overpopulation. Beyond population control, kastracja can offer significant health and behavioral benefits. For males, it can reduce the risk of testicular cancer and prostate problems, and may decrease behaviors like roaming, aggression, and territorial marking driven by testosterone. For females, it eliminates the risk of uterine infections (pyometra) and ovarian or uterine cancers, and prevents heat cycles, which can attract unwanted male attention and lead to stress.

The procedure is typically performed by a veterinarian under general anesthesia. While generally considered safe, as with any surgery, there are potential risks and complications, though they are usually minor and manageable. Recovery time varies depending on the animal's age, health, and the specific surgical approach. Post-operative care often includes pain management and restricting the animal's activity to allow for proper healing. The long-term effects of kastracja can include changes in metabolism, potentially leading to weight gain if diet and exercise are not managed.
