This material accumulates on the forest floor in coniferous ecosystems. Kartiolietteet plays a significant role in the ecology of these environments, influencing soil properties, nutrient cycling, and the habitat for various organisms.

The decomposition of kartiolietteet is a slow process due to the waxy cuticle and recalcitrant compounds found in conifer needles, such as lignin and cellulose.
