Karlaz

Karlaz is a fictional city used in various works of speculative fiction to illustrate urban development in the Veridian Republic. It is positioned on the Veridian Gulf, serving as the nation’s administrative and economic center. The city covers about 620 square kilometers and sits along the Lira River, with the Karlock Hills rising to the east. As of 2023, the population is estimated at 1.2 million, making Karlaz the most populous urban area in Veridia.

Historically, Karlaz grew from a medieval trading settlement founded in the 11th century to the capital of Veridia by the 16th century. It expanded through industrialization in the 19th century and urban reforms in the late 20th century, leading to a modern, mixed-use city that preserves a historic core alongside contemporary districts.

The economy is diversified, anchored by the port and logistics sector, manufacturing, finance, and technology services. The port handles container traffic and serves as a regional hub for maritime trade. Karlaz is also home to a regional university and several research institutes.

Culturally, the city hosts the International Arts Festival and maintains a network of neighborhoods with distinct identities. Landmarks include the Old Town Market, Parliament Building, Harbor Promenade, and Central Library. The transportation system comprises Karlaz International Airport, a central railway hub, and an extensive urban bus and tram network.

Governance is by a mayor and city council, with a unicameral council of around 60 seats. Local elections are held every four years.
