Karboxinegységekhez, often translated as "carboxyl groups," are a fundamental functional group in organic chemistry. The core structure of a carboxyl group consists of a carbonyl group (C=O) bonded to a hydroxyl group (-OH). This specific arrangement imparts distinct chemical properties to molecules containing it. The carbon atom in the carbonyl group is sp2 hybridized, leading to a planar geometry around it.

The acidic nature of carboxyl groups is a defining characteristic. The hydrogen atom of the hydroxyl group is relatively acidic due to the electron-withdrawing effect of the adjacent carbonyl group and the resonance stabilization of the resulting carboxylate anion. This acidity allows carboxyl groups to readily donate a proton in aqueous solutions, forming a negatively charged carboxylate ion. This property is crucial in biological systems, where many important molecules like amino acids and fatty acids possess carboxyl groups.

Carboxyl groups participate in a variety of chemical reactions, including esterification, where they react with alcohols to form esters, and amide formation, where they react with amines to form amides.
