Kantatieverkosto refers to the network of kantatiet, a class of roads in Finland that forms part of the country’s road hierarchy between national main roads (valtate) and local roads. Kantatiet are intended to provide reliable connections between municipalities, service centers and the broader national and regional road network, especially in rural and sparsely populated areas. They facilitate everyday mobility, enable access to services and support local economies.

Administratively, kantatie maintenance and development are shared responsibilities. The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (Väylävirasto) oversees national-level planning and major improvements, while many kantatiet are maintained or co-maintained by municipalities, sometimes with state subsidies. Planning follows national transport strategies and regional development plans, aiming to improve accessibility, safety and travel times across regions.

Characteristics of the kantatieverkosto vary by region. Some sections are paved and allow relatively higher speeds, while others are lower-capacity roads with tighter curves and more limited overtaking opportunities. Traffic volumes are generally lower than on valtatie networks, but the roads remain important for daily commuting, school transport, local commerce and emergency services. Upgrades often focus on safety improvements, winter maintenance, resilience to weather, and targeted capacity enhancements where bottlenecks occur.

Historically, kantatiet networks supported regional growth by connecting smaller municipalities to larger markets. In contemporary planning, the network is integrated with national and regional strategies and may be funded through national programs as well as EU regional development funds.
