These treatments can enhance durability, improve comfort, add water repellency, introduce flame resistance, or create specific aesthetic effects. Common kankaankäsittely techniques include mechanical treatments such as calendering, which uses rollers to press and smooth the fabric, giving it a sheen and denser structure. Sanforization is another mechanical process that pre-shrinks cotton fabrics to prevent excessive shrinkage after garment production. Chemical treatments are also prevalent. For example, mercerization strengthens cotton fibers and increases their luster and dye uptake. Water-repellent finishes are often achieved by applying silicones or fluorocarbons.
