Kalvonäppäimistö, often referred to as a membrane keyboard, is a type of computer keyboard where the individual keys are pressure-sensitive pads that activate by pressing down on a thin, flexible membrane. This membrane typically contains a layer of conductive material. When a key is pressed, it makes contact with another conductive layer beneath it, completing an electrical circuit and registering the keystroke.

There are several common types of membrane keyboards. Dome-switch keyboards use a rubber or silicone dome under each keycap. When pressed, the dome collapses, pushing the conductive material on its underside to make contact. Scissor-switch membrane keyboards, often found in laptops and low-profile keyboards, utilize a scissor-like mechanism to stabilize the keycap and provide a more tactile feel. Flat-panel membrane keyboards are entirely sealed and lack individual keycaps, offering a smooth, wipeable surface, but often a less satisfying typing experience.

Membrane keyboards are generally quieter than mechanical keyboards, as the membrane dampens the sound of the key presses. They are also often less expensive to manufacture and can be more resistant to spills and dust due to their sealed design. However, they typically offer less tactile feedback and durability compared to mechanical keyboards, and the lifespan of the membrane can be shorter. The typing feel can vary significantly between different types of membrane keyboards.
