Kalvokiinnittymää refers to a condition where the inner lining of the eyelid, known as the conjunctiva, becomes abnormally attached to the surface of the eyeball, the cornea or sclera. This adhesion can occur for various reasons, including inflammation, infection, or trauma to the eye. When the conjunctiva adheres to the cornea, it is specifically termed a corneal adhesion, and if it attaches to the sclera, it is a scleral adhesion.

Symptoms of kalvokiinnittymää can vary depending on the severity and location of the adhesion. Mild cases might present with minimal discomfort, while more significant attachments can cause pain, irritation, redness, a foreign body sensation, and difficulty moving the eyeball. Vision can also be affected if the adhesion obstructs the pupil or distorts the corneal surface.

The causes of kalvokiinnittymää include severe dry eye disease, where the lack of lubrication can lead to friction and adherence. Certain eye surgeries, especially those involving extensive manipulation of ocular tissues, can also contribute. Infections, such as severe conjunctivitis or keratitis, can lead to scarring and subsequent adhesions. Chemical or thermal burns to the eye are also significant risk factors.

Diagnosis typically involves a comprehensive eye examination by an ophthalmologist. The doctor may use special dyes, like fluorescein, to highlight any irregularities on the corneal or conjunctival surface. Treatment strategies depend on the underlying cause and the extent of the adhesion. Mild cases might be managed with lubricating eye drops or ointments to reduce friction. More severe adhesions may require surgical intervention, such as lysis of the adhesion or conjunctival grafting, to separate the tissues and restore normal eye movement and comfort. Prompt diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial to prevent long-term complications.
