Kaltevalla

Kaltevalla is a rural municipality in the northern region of Nordmark, comprising several villages with Kaltevalla Center as the administrative seat. The municipality covers approximately 60 square kilometers and had a population of about 3,200 in 2022.

The area is characterized by boreal forest, numerous lakes, and the Kalte River running through the valley. The climate is subarctic, with cold winters and short, mild summers. Protected areas include Kaltevalla Nature Reserve.

Settlement in the area dates back to the medieval period; the parish church dates to 1702. Kaltevalla developed around forestry and agriculture, and the municipal center grew through the 19th century. The municipality boundaries were redefined in 1968.

The economy rests on forestry, wood processing, farming, and local services, with a small but growing tourism sector around outdoor recreation. Kaltevalla is connected by regional roads; the nearest railway station lies about 40 kilometers away, and there is no airport.

As of 2022, the population density was around 53 residents per square kilometer. The community is predominantly Nordmarkian in ancestry, with a small Swedish-speaking minority. Local culture centers on the annual Kaltevalla Festival, the public library, and the historic Kaltevalla Church.
