Kalsiittisementti

Kalsiittisementti, or calcium silicate cement, is a cementitious material based on calcium silicate compounds. It is used in construction for fire resistance, insulation, and as a binder in boards, plaster, and repair mortars. The material is typically produced by combining lime- or calcium-containing materials with silica and water, forming calcium silicate hydrates through hydration or related curing processes. Some commercial products are autoclaved calcium silicate boards that gain strength through high-temperature steam curing.

In practice, calcium silicate cement boards are non-combustible and offer good thermal insulation and dimensional stability. They often have lower density than traditional Portland cement concretes and cure through hydration and pozzolanic reactions. Autoclaved forms achieve additional strength via steam curing, while other formulations are designed to balance strength with light weight.

Common applications include fireproofing coatings and boards in walls and ceilings, thermal insulation panels, interior plaster bases, and repair compounds in historic buildings. They are favored where non-combustibility, fire resistance, and moderate mechanical strength are priorities, and where protective coatings or membranes help guard against moisture.

Historically developed in the 20th century as an alternative or complement to traditional cementitious binders, kalsiittisementti remains in use in various regions for fire-rated assemblies and insulation boards. Its performance depends on the specific formulation, cure conditions, and protection from moisture, making proper detailing important in building design.
