In this concept, the basic time block called a Kalendermonate corresponds roughly to a month in ordinary calendars and is tied to the length of a typical lunar cycle, about 29.5 days, though exact lengths vary by version. The term combines the notions of calendar and month, reflecting its intended function as a recurring, month-like period within a year.

Origin and terminology often appear in speculative world-building and discussions of calendar reform ideas that seek to harmonize lunar observations with a fixed solar year. Kalendermonate variants are used to explore how a society might organize months around consistent moon phases while preserving seasonal anchors.

Structure and variants can differ. A common version divides the year into 12 Kalendermonate, with months arranged to approximate the lunar cycle through alternating lengths of 29 and 30 days, or through fixed 30-day blocks supplemented by occasional adjustments.
