Kalastuslait

Kalastuslait refers to the body of laws governing fishing activity in a given jurisdiction. In Finnish usage, the term encompasses the statutory framework that regulates who may fish, when and where fishing is permitted, and how fish resources may be used and protected. The central statutes are designed to balance the needs of commercial and recreational fishers with the long-term conservation of fish stocks and aquatic ecosystems.

Typical elements of kalastuslait include licensing and registration requirements for fishers, permitted gear and methods, seasonal and area restrictions, size and bag limits, and quotas for certain species. The regulations also define fishing rights, allocation of resources between commercial fleets and hobby fishers, and measures to protect endangered or vulnerable species and habitats.
