Kalastelu

Kalastelu is a Finnish term with two main meanings. In everyday language it denotes fishing—the act of catching fish with rods, nets, or other gear. In information security, kalastelu refers to phishing, a deceptive practice aimed at obtaining personal or financial information by impersonating a legitimate entity.

As a recreational activity, kalastelu includes angling with rod and line, lure fishing, and, in some contexts, netting. In Finland, recreational fishing is regulated; most water bodies require some form of permit, and many anglers also pay the kalastonhoitomaksu, a state fishing management fee. Regulations specify seasons, minimum sizes, bag limits, and protected areas to safeguard fish stocks and habitats. Compliance is typically verified by local authorities, fishing clubs, or park services.

In cybersecurity, kalastelu describes attempts to trick people into revealing sensitive data. Common methods include phishing emails, text messages, or calls that mimic banks, government agencies, or well-known companies. Tactics rely on urgency, authority, or fear. Protective measures include skepticism toward unsolicited messages, verifying requests through official channels, enabling two-factor authentication, keeping software up to date, and using reliable spam filtering. Organizations mitigate risk with email authentication standards and user training.
