Kalabhavan

Kalabhavan is a term used in Kerala, India to denote a center or institute devoted to performing arts. The word translates roughly to "art house" in Malayalam and is commonly applied to training centers that offer programs in music, dance, theatre, and related disciplines, as well as venues for performances.

The most widely known use refers to a network of Kalabhavan centers established in the mid-20th century in cities such as Kochi (Cochin) and Thrissur. These centers articulate a coherent approach to training, combining formal classes with stage work. They have been influential in developing modern forms of Malayalam theatre and in popularizing mimicry as a performance art. Instruction often covers acting, voice, rhythm, and music, along with group performance and productions by resident troupes.

Many artists trained at Kalabhavan have gone on to careers in film, television, and stage, contributing to Malayalam cinema and beyond. The name Kalabhavan has thus become associated with a distinctive, collaborative approach to performing arts and with a tradition of ensemble performances. Because there are multiple independent Kalabhavan centers, programs and organizational structures vary by location.
