Kaatopaikkatyyppejä refers to different classifications of landfills based on their design, the waste they accept, and their environmental impact. These classifications are crucial for proper waste management and to minimize pollution.

One common distinction is between sanitary landfills and open dumps. Sanitary landfills are engineered facilities designed to contain waste and prevent it from leaching into the environment. They typically involve lining the bottom with impermeable material, managing leachate (liquid that has passed through waste) through collection and treatment systems, and controlling landfill gas (a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide) through venting or energy recovery. In contrast, open dumps are uncontrolled sites where waste is simply deposited without any environmental protection measures. These are highly polluting and are largely phased out in developed countries.

Another classification relates to the type of waste handled. Inert landfills are designated for non-hazardous waste that does not undergo significant physical, chemical, or biological transformations, such as construction and demolition debris. Bioreactor landfills are designed to accelerate the decomposition of waste by introducing liquids and recirculating leachate. This process can lead to faster waste stabilization and increased biogas production. Hazardous waste landfills are specifically designed to safely store and contain highly toxic or dangerous materials, employing stringent containment measures to prevent any release into the environment. The choice of landfill type depends on the nature of the waste, regulatory requirements, and available technology.
