KFORs

Kosovo Force (KFOR) is a NATO-led multinational peacekeeping force responsible for securing Kosovo and providing a safe environment in the aftermath of the Kosovo War. It was established in 1999 by United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 to help restore stability, protect civilians, and create conditions for humanitarian aid and the return of refugees and displaced persons.

KFOR is composed of personnel from NATO member states and partner countries. The force is multinational, with a leadership that rotates among contributing nations, and rarely numbers in the low thousands. Its core tasks include deterrence of renewed hostilities, freedom of movement for civilians, enforcement of public order, protection of critical infrastructure, and support for civilian authorities, including border management and mentoring of local security forces.

Operations include routine patrols, checkpoints, security escorts, and response to crises. KFOR cooperates with Kosovo Police, local authorities, and international missions such as EULEX and the United Nations. It has historically contributed to demining and humanitarian assistance as needed and supported civilian reconstruction and disaster relief.

Since Kosovo's declaration of independence in 2008, KFOR has maintained a security presence to deter ethnic violence and facilitate political processes. The mission adapts to changing security conditions, with a mission mandate kept under international law and with the consent of Kosovo's institutions, while coordinating with international organizations and member states.
