The advent of the electric starter motor revolutionized engine starting. This system uses an electric motor, powered by the vehicle's battery, to engage with the engine's flywheel and spin the crankshaft. Once the engine starts, a mechanism disengages the starter motor to prevent damage. This is the most common starting method in modern vehicles due to its convenience and reliability.

Diesel engines, due to their compression-ignition nature, often require more robust starting strategies. Glow plugs are commonly used in diesel engines. These are small heating elements that preheat the combustion chamber, ensuring sufficient temperature for ignition when the fuel is injected. In extremely cold conditions, starting aids like ether starting fluid may be employed, though this should be done with caution.

Other less common or specialized starting techniques include compressed air starting, used in large industrial engines and some marine applications, and sometimes inertia starters, which store kinetic energy to help spin the engine over.
