Jännitteensäätölaitteen, often translated as voltage regulator, is an electronic device designed to automatically maintain a constant output voltage. This is crucial for sensitive electronic components that can be damaged by voltage fluctuations. Without a voltage regulator, the output voltage of a power source, such as a battery or a transformer, can vary significantly depending on the load connected and the input voltage.

Voltage regulators work by comparing the output voltage to a reference voltage and adjusting their internal resistance to compensate for deviations. If the output voltage is too high, the regulator increases its resistance, reducing the current flow and thus the voltage. Conversely, if the output voltage is too low, the regulator decreases its resistance, allowing more current to flow and increasing the voltage.

There are several types of voltage regulators. Linear regulators are simple and provide a very stable output voltage, but they dissipate excess energy as heat, making them inefficient, especially when the voltage difference between input and output is large. Switching regulators, on the other hand, are much more efficient. They work by rapidly switching the power on and off, storing energy in an inductor or capacitor and releasing it in controlled pulses to maintain the desired output voltage. This switching action results in less heat dissipation.

Voltage regulators are essential components in a wide range of electronic devices, from simple battery-powered gadgets to complex computer systems and industrial equipment, ensuring stable and reliable operation.
