Jumpstarting

Jumpstarting is the act of starting a vehicle or device that has a discharged power source by supplying external electrical power from another source, such as a charged vehicle battery or a portable jump starter pack. In automotive use, it most commonly involves a 12-volt lead-acid battery and either another vehicle or a dedicated jump starter.

Equipment and safety: The typical equipment includes jumper cables or a portable jump starter. Before beginning, ensure both vehicles are off, in park or neutral with the parking brakes engaged, and that cables are in good condition. Keep sparks and flames away from the battery, and avoid touching the clamps together. If the battery or cables are damaged, or if you smell sulfur or see leaking fluid, do not attempt a jumpstart.

Procedure: Connect the positive clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery, and connect the other end to the positive terminal of the donor battery or jump starter. Connect the negative clamp to the negative terminal of the donor battery, and connect the other end to an unpainted metal surface on the engine block or chassis of the vehicle with the dead battery. Start the donor vehicle and, after a few moments, attempt to start the dead vehicle. If it starts, remove the cables in reverse order: first the negative clamp from the dead vehicle, then the negative from the donor, then the positive from the dead battery, and finally the positive from the donor. Allow the engine to run to recharge the battery.

Limitations and safety notes: If the engine does not start after several attempts, discontinue and inspect the battery and charging system or seek professional assistance. Jumpstarting is usually a temporary measure to get a vehicle running and does not replace a faulty or dead battery. It is not recommended for damaged batteries or certain modern vehicles without following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Other uses: The term jumpstart is also used metaphorically to describe initiating a project or activity by injecting energy, resources, or capital to accelerate progress.
