Joulunpyhät

Joulunpyhät, a Finnish term, refers to the Christmas holidays. This period typically encompasses Christmas Eve (jouluaatto), Christmas Day (joulupäivä), and Boxing Day (tapaninpäivä). These days are deeply ingrained in Finnish culture and are celebrated with various traditions and customs.

Christmas Eve is often the most significant day, with many families gathering for a traditional Christmas dinner. Common dishes include ham, various casseroles like rutabaga, carrot, and potato, as well as pickled herring. Many Finns also visit saunas on Christmas Eve, a practice believed to cleanse both the body and spirit. Another prominent tradition is the reading of the Christmas Peace proclamation from Turku, which is broadcast on television and radio. Gifts are usually exchanged on this evening.

Christmas Day is generally a more relaxed day, often spent visiting relatives, enjoying the festive atmosphere, or participating in outdoor activities like ice skating or skiing, weather permitting. Some Finnish families also attend church services. Boxing Day, Tapaninpäivä, continues the holiday spirit, often involving visiting friends or engaging in leisurely pursuits. The joulunpyhät period is a time for family, reflection, and enjoying the winter season.
