The name's origin is uncertain, with fans and authors offering competing etymologies,including pseudoglish coinages or backronyms.

In the standard fictional concept, a jimam consists of multiple interchangeable modules encasing propulsion, sensing, computation, and actuation. The modules connect in a swarm-like network to form configurations adapted to tasks. They rely on decentralized coordination rather than a central control, enabling robust operation in challenging environments. Energy is drawn from small batteries and, in some stories, from ambient sources; communication uses short-range wireless links with limited bandwidth to preserve resilience.
