Jazykove

Jazykove is a small village located in the Tvrdošín District of the Žilina Region in northern Slovakia. It has a population of approximately 250 residents, making it one of the smallest inhabited areas in the country.

The village is situated on the Tisovica river and has a history dating back to the 13th century. Its name is thought to be derived from the Slovak word for language or tongue, reflective of the linguistic diversity prevalent in the region. Historically, Jazykove has been inhabited by various ethnic groups, including Slovaks, Ukrainians, and Roma.

The village is sparsely populated and mostly devoid of modern amenities. A few rural homes, some old farm buildings, and a local pub make up the majority of the village's structures. Residents rely on subsistence farming and agriculture for their livelihood, cultivating crops such as wheat, rye, and sunflowers. The region around the village offers a prime area for hunting and gathering wild fruits, berries, and mushrooms.

Despite its isolation, Jazykove has a strong sense of community, with residents often gathering to celebrate festivals and traditions. During the summer months, locals participate in the annual Gallová festival, which honors the region's agricultural heritage. However, access to basic facilities and services is limited, with the nearest town, Tvrdošín, being over 45 kilometers away. The village is slowly experiencing change, though, with some investment in new homes and amenities, partly driven by EU funding initiatives aimed at rural development.
