Jauhepetimenetelmät, known in English as powder metallurgy, is a manufacturing process that involves forming metal powder into a desired shape and then sintering it to create a solid part. This technique offers several advantages, including the ability to create complex shapes with high precision, excellent material utilization, and the potential for producing parts with unique properties not easily achievable through traditional melting and casting methods.

The process typically begins with the production of fine metal powders. These powders can be made from a variety of metals and alloys, including iron, steel, copper, aluminum, and tungsten. After powder production, the material is compacted into a die under high pressure to achieve a green compact, which has a defined shape but is still fragile. The next critical step is sintering, where the green compact is heated in a controlled atmosphere furnace to a temperature below the melting point of the primary metal. During sintering, atomic diffusion causes the powder particles to bond together, increasing the density and strength of the part.

Post-sintering operations can further enhance the properties of the part, such as heat treatment, machining, or impregnation. Powder metallurgy is widely used in various industries, including automotive (for gears, bearings, and engine components), aerospace, medical devices, and even in the production of cutting tools and magnets. Its ability to produce intricate parts with controlled microstructures and excellent mechanical properties makes it a valuable manufacturing technique.
