Jatkoroute

Jatkoroute is a long-distance route designed for hikers and cyclists, located in the fictional Jatko region of the Nordic union. The route covers roughly 320 kilometers and is intended to be completed in about 12 to 16 days on foot or 6 to 9 days by bicycle, depending on pace. Maintained by a cooperative of regional authorities and volunteer groups, it forms part of an initiative to promote sustainable outdoor travel.

The landscape includes boreal forests, peat bogs, limestone ridges, and a sequence of glacial lakes. It links small towns and cultural sites, with accommodations ranging from hostels to campgrounds. The path uses a mix of marked trails, quiet rural roads, and boardwalk sections designed to minimize environmental impact. The route is organized into three main sections, north, central, and south, each offering different scenery and points of interest such as historic churches, viewpoints, and traditional craft villages.

The route was established in 2010 by the Jatko Regional Council to promote outdoor recreation and sustainable tourism. The name derives from a local term meaning passage or crossing.

The preferred travel period is late spring to early autumn, with some sections usable in shoulder seasons. Weather can be variable, especially at higher elevations. The route is suitable for experienced hikers and cyclists, though many segments are modular and allow shorter day itineraries.

Jatkoroute is credited with boosting regional tourism, supporting conservation efforts, and fostering community involvement in trail maintenance.
