Jaguarundi

The jaguarundi, Herpailurus yagouaroundi, is a small wild cat native to the Americas. It is found from the southern United States to Argentina. Jaguarundis are solitary and primarily diurnal, meaning they are most active during the day. Their diet consists mainly of small mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. They are known for their long, slender bodies and short legs, adaptations that help them navigate dense vegetation. Their fur color can vary significantly, ranging from a uniform dark gray to reddish-brown, and sometimes even a spotted phase, though this is rare in adults.

Jaguarundis inhabit a wide range of environments, including tropical forests, grasslands, savannas, and scrublands. They are skilled climbers and swimmers, which aids them in hunting and escaping predators. Despite their widespread distribution, jaguarundi populations are declining in some areas due to habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as hunting for their fur and for sport. Conservation efforts are in place in various regions to protect this adaptable yet vulnerable species. They are the only member of the genus Herpailurus.
