JPEGpakkaus, often referred to as JPEG compression, is a widely used method for compressing digital images. It is a form of lossy compression, meaning that some image data is discarded during the compression process to achieve smaller file sizes. This loss of data is generally imperceptible to the human eye, especially at moderate compression levels. The JPEG standard was developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group and is particularly effective for photographic images with smooth color gradients and complex textures.

The compression process involves several steps. First, the image is transformed into a different color space, typically YCbCr, which separates luminance (brightness) from chrominance (color). Then, the chrominance components are subsampled, as the human eye is less sensitive to color detail than brightness detail. Next, the image data is divided into blocks, and a discrete cosine transform (DCT) is applied to each block. The DCT converts the spatial domain image data into the frequency domain, separating high-frequency components (fine details) from low-frequency components (broader areas of color).

Finally, quantization is applied. This is the lossy step where the DCT coefficients are divided by values from a quantization table, and the results are rounded to the nearest integer. Higher quantization values lead to more data loss and smaller file sizes, while lower values retain more detail but result in larger files. Entropy coding, such as Huffman coding or arithmetic coding, is then used to further compress the quantized coefficients, creating the final JPEG file. The level of compression can be adjusted, allowing users to balance file size and image quality.
