Iánns

Iánns is a fictional archipelago and the people who inhabit it, created as a concise reference for a speculative universe. The term applies to both the homeland and the culture, language, and social practices shared by its residents.

Geography and environment: The archipelago comprises six principal islands—Aar, Brunn, Ceil, Draug, Elka, and Fjor—and numerous smaller islets. The landscape features rugged coastlines, peat bogs, and coniferous forests. The climate is cool and maritime, with strong winds and frequent storms. Population about 12,000, dispersed across coastal towns and hillside villages.

History and governance: Settlement began around the 9th century by seafaring communities from the northern regions. By the medieval period, the islands formed a loose confederation of clans. In the 20th century, Iánns gained formal autonomy within a regional union and, after a 1963 referendum, achieved full independence. The General Assembly of the Isles negotiates national policy, while an executive Prime Minister oversees day-to-day government.

Language and culture: The native language, Iánni, is part of the North Atlantic language family and uses a Latin-based script with diacritics. Literacy is high, and most residents are bilingual in the neighboring regional tongue. Cultural life centers on seafaring heritage, woodcarving, and knotwork. Important annual customs include the Midwinter Tide festival and spring fisheries rite, blending traditional pre-Christian rites with later Christian influences.

Economy and environment: The economy relies on sustainable fisheries, kelp farming, small-scale shipbuilding, and tourism focused on nature and heritage sites. Conservation measures protect migratory birds and coastal habitats, while local cooperatives manage resources and support coastal communities.
