Itsepestävät is a Finnish term that translates to "self-cleaning" or "self-washing." It is most commonly used in the context of textiles, referring to fabrics or garments that possess properties allowing them to resist stains, repel dirt, or even neutralize odors without the need for conventional washing. This functionality is typically achieved through advanced material science and surface treatments.

These self-cleaning properties can be engineered in several ways. One method involves creating hydrophobic or oleophobic surfaces on the fabric fibers. Hydrophobic surfaces repel water, causing liquids to bead up and roll off, taking dirt particles with them. Oleophobic surfaces similarly repel oils and grease. Another approach utilizes photocatalytic materials, such as titanium dioxide, which can break down organic matter, including stains and odor-causing compounds, when exposed to light, particularly UV light. Some self-cleaning textiles may also incorporate antimicrobial agents that inhibit the growth of bacteria responsible for odors.
