Isäntäohjelmisto refers to the software that runs on a host computer or server and manages and controls access to its resources. This is particularly relevant in contexts like remote access, cloud computing, and virtualisation. The host software provides the environment where other applications or virtual machines can operate.

In a remote access scenario, isäntäohjelmisto is installed on the machine that is being accessed remotely. It handles incoming connections, authenticates users, and transmits the screen, keyboard, and mouse input between the host and the client machine. Examples include remote desktop servers or specialised remote support tools.

Within cloud computing, the underlying infrastructure is managed by sophisticated host software that orchestrates the allocation of hardware resources, such as processing power, storage, and network bandwidth, to various virtual machines or containers. This software is responsible for the virtualisation layer that abstracts the physical hardware.
