Isrensning

Isrensning, translationally described as ice clearing, is a Swedish term for the removal or prevention of ice accumulation on surfaces and equipment. Isrensning is practiced across sectors to maintain safety, access, and operation during icy conditions and can involve mechanical, chemical, and thermal methods.

Applications include municipal winter road maintenance (clearing roads and cycle paths), aviation (runway, taxiway and apron de-icing and anti-icing), maritime operations (deck and hull ice removal; ice management in ports), and industrial facilities where freezing can impair equipment or processes.

Common methods include mechanical removal (ice scrapers, snow plows, blowers, and scraping devices; sometimes combined with abrasion), chemical de-icing (salts such as sodium chloride and calcium chloride; organic or environmentally friendly alternatives), pre-treatment or anti-icing agents, and thermal approaches (electric heating mats, steam or heated air) to melt ice.
