Ironholds

Ironholds is a federation of fortified mining settlements in the northern mountains, centered on the stronghold Fort Ironcrest. The term refers to both the central fortress and the collective of holds that share governance, economy, and defense.

Geography and organization: The holds occupy high-elevation valleys along the Ironjaw Range, with rich iron ore veins accessed through extensive tunnel networks. Twelve holds form the federation, interconnected by carved passages and limited rail lines. A ceremonial Council of Holdmasters convenes at Ironcrest, while a standing Marshal oversees security and logistics.

History: Ironholds traces its origins to dwarven clans who settled the region during the early medieval period. Mutual defense and trade led to a loose confederation that gradually formalized into the Holds Council. The federation endured sieges and shifting regional powers, and modernization in the 18th and 19th centuries centralized smelting and standardized coinage.

Economy: The economy centers on iron ore mining, smelting, and metalworking, supported by timber, stone, and transport services. Guilds regulate mining, masonry, and smithing, while caravans connect the holds to neighboring realms and coastal markets.

Society: The population includes dwarven clans and a minority of humans and other workers. Apprenticeship and guild discipline dominate professional life, with emphasis on engineering, mapmaking, and tunnel safety. The annual Festival of Sparks celebrates craft and endurance.

Infrastructure: Notable sites include Fort Ironcrest, the Cauldron Forge, and the Great Anvil Workshop. The tunnel network—often called the Deep Roads—links surface towns to remote mines, while a river barrier at the Iron Fork provides strategic defense.
