IoTÜberwachung, or IoT monitoring, is the practice of observing and managing Internet of Things devices and networks to ensure reliable operation, data quality, and security. It encompasses the continuous collection of telemetry from devices, assessment of connectivity, device health, and the monitoring of sensor data streams for anomalies and performance metrics.

A typical architecture includes edge devices, gateways, cloud or on‑premises platforms, and analytics modules. Devices publish telemetry via protocols such as MQTT or CoAP; gateways and edge nodes perform preprocessing; centralized platforms store data, run analytics, and generate alerts and dashboards. Monitoring covers availability, uptime, latency, throughput, battery level, firmware status, and security events such as unauthorized access attempts.

Common use cases occur in smart buildings for energy management and occupancy sensing; in industrial IoT for predictive maintenance and asset health; in transportation and supply chains for tracking and condition monitoring; and in healthcare for device safety and patient monitoring. Effective IoT Überwachung supports operational efficiency, safety, and service continuity by enabling rapid detection of faults, performance degradation, and security incidents.

Challenges and considerations include data privacy and regulatory compliance, such as GDPR, interoperability across vendors, and scalability and data governance. Technical risks involve insecure devices, weak authentication, and software supply chain issues, while operational concerns include maintenance costs, alert fatigue, and integration with existing IT systems.

The field is evolving toward edge‑centred architectures, AI‑driven anomaly detection, and automated remediation, with standards efforts aimed at improving interoperability and security across heterogeneous IoT environments.
