The term "invitro" is Latin for "in glass," referencing the common use of laboratory glassware such as petri dishes or test tubes for these experiments. This methodology allows scientists to isolate specific biological processes, cells, or molecules for detailed study. By removing the complexities of a whole organism, researchers can better understand fundamental biological mechanisms, the effects of specific substances, and the interactions of different biological components.

Invitro studies are crucial for initial drug discovery and development. Potential therapeutic compounds can be tested for efficacy and toxicity on cell cultures or isolated tissues before progressing to more complex animal models or human clinical trials.
