Investitionsförderungen, often translated as investment incentives or subsidies, are financial or non-financial measures implemented by public authorities to stimulate private investment in specific regions, sectors, or projects. The primary objective is to promote economic development, enhance competitiveness, create or secure jobs, and encourage innovation.

These support mechanisms can take various forms. Direct financial grants provide capital for a portion of the investment costs. Low-interest loans or loan guarantees reduce the financial burden and risk for companies. Tax allowances, such as reduced corporate tax rates or special depreciation rules, offer long-term relief. Non-financial support may include provision of subsidized land or infrastructure, and advisory services.

In countries like Germany, investment subsidies are commonly offered at multiple levels: federal, state (Bundesland), and even municipal. Programs are often targeted, for instance, towards small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), research and development activities, or investments in structurally weak regions to balance economic disparities.

Eligibility for these subsidies typically depends on meeting specific criteria, which can relate to the company's size, the nature of the investment, its potential for job creation, and its location. The application process usually involves submitting a detailed business plan to the relevant funding authority.

While Investitionsförderungen are widely seen as a crucial tool for industrial policy, they are also subject to debate. Proponents argue they are essential for correcting market failures and fostering growth. Critics caution against market distortions, unfair competition, and the risk of subsidizing investments that would have occurred anyway.
