An Investeringsfonds is a pooled investment vehicle that collects capital from individual and institutional investors to build a diversified portfolio of assets. The fund is usually managed by a professional asset management company and supervised by a custodian. Investors hold units or shares that represent their proportional stake. Pooling capital gives access to a broader range of securities, professional management, and, often, lower costs.

Most funds are open-end, issuing new units and redeeming them as investors buy or sell. Closed-end funds issue a fixed number of shares and trade on stock exchanges. Common fund categories include equity funds, fixed-income funds, mixed or balanced funds, money market funds, and specialized funds such as real estate or commodities. In recent decades passive vehicles like index funds and exchange-traded funds have grown, offering low-cost exposure to benchmarks.

Regulation and disclosure requirements vary by jurisdiction but generally aim to protect investors through transparent information and prudent operations. In the European Union, UCITS funds can be marketed across member states, and alternative investment funds are subject to the AIFMD. Funds typically publish a prospectus and a simplified key investor information document.

Fees vary but commonly include management fees, and in some cases performance fees and transaction costs. Risks include market risk, credit risk, liquidity risk, and potential management underperformance. Investing in a fund is usually done via banks, brokers, or directly through the fund manager, after appropriate KYC and suitability checks.
