Intruusiojärjestelmille, or intrusion systems, refers to a category of technologies designed to detect and prevent unauthorized access to computer systems and networks. These systems are crucial components of modern cybersecurity strategies, aiming to identify malicious activities and protect sensitive data.

There are two primary types of intrusion systems: intrusion detection systems (IDS) and intrusion prevention systems (IPS). An IDS monitors network traffic or system activities for suspicious patterns. When a potential threat is identified, it generates an alert, allowing security personnel to investigate. An IPS, on the other hand, goes a step further. In addition to detecting threats, it can actively take measures to block or prevent them in real-time. This might include dropping malicious packets, resetting connections, or blocking traffic from specific IP addresses.

Intrusion systems employ various detection methods. Signature-based detection relies on a database of known attack patterns or "signatures." Anomaly-based detection establishes a baseline of normal system or network behavior and flags deviations from this norm as potentially malicious. Hybrid approaches, combining both signature and anomaly detection, are also common to offer more comprehensive protection.

The deployment of intrusion systems can occur at different points within a network. Network-based intrusion detection/prevention systems (NIDS/NIPS) monitor traffic flowing across the entire network. Host-based intrusion detection/prevention systems (HIDS/HIPS) are installed on individual computers or servers to monitor their specific activities. Effective use of intrusion systems requires regular updates of threat signatures, proper tuning of detection rules to minimize false positives, and integration with other security tools for a holistic security posture.
