Interventrikularis

Interventrikularis refers to the space or separation between the ventricles of an organ, most commonly used in the context of the heart. In the heart, the interventricular septum is a muscular wall that divides the left ventricle from the right ventricle. This septum is crucial for the efficient pumping of blood by ensuring that oxygenated blood from the lungs does not mix with deoxygenated blood returning from the body. The interventricular septum develops early in embryonic life and is a continuous structure composed of both muscular and membranous parts. Its integrity is vital for normal cardiac function.

Disruptions to the interventricular septum can lead to conditions known as ventricular septal defects (VSDs). These are congenital heart defects where a hole exists in the wall separating the ventricles. The size and location of the VSD can vary, and depending on these factors, blood may shunt from the higher-pressure left ventricle to the lower-pressure right ventricle, leading to increased blood flow to the lungs and potential heart strain. Surgical or interventional closure is often recommended for VSDs that cause significant symptoms or hemodynamic problems. The term interventrikularis broadly encompasses any anatomical or pathological feature related to this septal division.
